Stephen F. Austin beats back DII St. Edwards 73-60
NACOGDOCHES, Texas (AP) — Shannon Bogues scored 16 points and Stephen F. Austin fought off spirited Division II-member St. Edwards for a 73-60 win on Sunday.
Karl Nicholas made a pair of free throws to put Stephen F. Austin (4-1) ahead 18-17 with 11:47 before halftime and the Lumberjacks never trailed again. But the Hilltoppers hung tough and kept it close and trailed 38-33 at halftime.
SFA emerged from intermission and Jovan Grujic and Davonte Fitzgerald made a pair of jumpers, Kevon Harris had a layup and Nicholas threw down a dunk and the score was 46-33 at the 17:55 mark.
Davonte Fitzgerald's 3-pointer made it 60-45 with nine minutes left, and that triggered a 10-0 St. Edwards run as James Taylor scored half the points. But the Hilltoppers went cold and the Lumberjacks used a 13-5 run over the last 5½ minutes to win it.
Fitzgerald finished with 12 points and nine rebounds and Nicholas scored 12.
Taylor led the Hilltoppers with 11 points, and though he was the lone player in double figures, St. Edwards had 11 players enter the scoring column.
