DELAND, Fla. (AP) Derick Newton scored a career-high 30 points with 10 rebounds and Stetson edged USC Upstate 89-86 in overtime on Thursday night.

Newton, a freshman, has scored in double figures in all but three games this season. He shot 10 of 16 from the floor with five 3-pointers for the Hatters (7-11, 1-2 Atlantic Sun). Brian Pegg scored 16 points with 11 rebounds, Divine Myles had 15 points with seven assists, and Luke Doyle added 14 points. Angel Rivera had a career-high 11 assists.

Mike Cunningham led USC Upstate (7-12, 1-1) with a career-high 21 points. Michael Buchanan scored 14 points with eight boards and Josh Cuthbertson added 13 points. Marvin Smith and Jure Span finished with 10 points apiece.

Span's jumper with 49 seconds left in overtime put USC Upstate up 86-85. Myles responded with a layup, then after a stop Newton made a pair from the line. Pegg's steal as time expired prevented a last-second attempt to tie.
