Texas Southern football star joins basketball team, throws down nasty dunk vs. Syracuse

Texas Southern's hopes for a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance was boosted earlier this month when Derrick Griffin, the school's star wide receiver, joined the basketball team.

In five contests, the 6-foot-7 freshman forward is averaging a double-double of 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

During Sunday's 80-67 loss to Syracuse, he showed off his unreal athleticism, catching a one-handed alley-oop from Chris Thomas.

Griffin is an absolute steal for the Tigers, both on the gridiron and on the hardwood. The Houston native was a heavily-recruited wideout coming out of high school, originally committing to Miami in 2013. However, he never qualified academically.

In his first college football season, Griffin had 36 receptions for 709 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He is now suiting up for a basketball team that is only 1-10, but is expected to contend for the top spot in the SWAC again this season.
