Tinkle, Eubanks score 19 apiece; Oregon St. beat UAPB 85-58 (Dec 09, 2017)
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) Oregon State came out flat on Saturday night, but took control of a close game thanks to defensive intensity, according to coach Wayne Tinkle.
''It's funny how things carry over on the offensive end when you play hard on D,'' Tinkle added.
Tres Tinkle and Drew Eubanks each scored 19 points as Oregon State pulled away from Arkansas Pine-Bluff in the second half for an 85-58 win on Saturday night.
Ethan Thompson added 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Stephen Thompson Jr. had 12 points and a career-high eight assists for the Beavers (6-3), who won their fourth straight.
Travon Harper had 20 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out and Joe'Randle Toliver added 12 points on four 3-pointers for the Golden Lions (0-10). UAPB has the longest active losing streak in Division I at 16 games, dating to last season.
''We're still building our chemistry, getting everything together. We're going to be right there come conference time,'' said assistant coach Richard Cannon, who led UAPB.
Cannon did not elaborate on head coach George Ivory's absence. But he added that the Golden Lions' 19 turnovers were far too many and that foul trouble by big men caused his team to be outrebounded 35-22.
Oregon State went ahead 15-4 to open the game, but Arkansas Pine-Bluff chipped away. The Golden Lions briefly took a 29-28 lead with about 3 minutes left in the first half after a 7-0 run.
The Beavers led 37-34 at the break.
Oregon State gradually stretched the lead in the second half, then went on a 19-0 surge, as UAPB went scoreless for five-plus minutes to make the score 76-49. Alfred Hollins had six points during the run, including a highlight dunk after Tres Tinkle poked the ball loose from the Golden Lions.
''It started because we had some stops, and we got out in transition a little bit,'' Wayne Tinkle said.
Hollins finished with 13 points.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff shot 54 percent in the first half but only 36 percent in the second half. Oregon State shot 51 percent for the game.
BIG PICTURE

Artavious McDyess, a forward/center who had two points and four rebounds off the bench on Saturday, is the son of former NBA player Antonio McDyess.
Oregon State: The Beavers winning streak has come with Seth Berger's first four games in the starting lineup. Berger, a senior forward, is playing his first season with Oregon State after transferring from Massachusetts. He had four points, four rebounds and three assists on Saturday. . The last time Oregon State had a four-game winning streak was nearly two years ago, in 2015-16.
JUNKYARD DOG: Wayne Tinkle said he wants a few junkyard dogs for his defense, and Ethan Thompson can play that part at times. Eubanks credited the freshman for the decisive second half surge. ''He made it a point to try and get stops and spark a run. . That kind of energy just feeds the rest of the guys out there,'' Eubanks said.
GETTING HEALTHY: Cannon said Harper is getting healthy again after offseason hip surgery. ''He's finally coming back to his real self. That's what he can bring night-in, night-out,'' Cannon added. He estimated that Harper was still only at 75 percent, but should be closer to 90 percent by the start of conference play.
