Tar Heels fall in latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll after loss at Duke

North Carolina falls to 10th in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll after losing its first meeting of the season with arch-rival Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Just days after beating No. 20 Notre Dame at home, North Carolina struggled to hit free throws and close out on three-point shooters on Thursday night against Duke. The Tar Heels were also without starting power forward Isaiah Hicks after the senior big man suffered a hamstring injury in practice the day prior.

Gonzaga retained the top spot in the poll after beating conference rival Saint Mary’s to stay undefeated on the season at 26-0.

Villanova remained at No. 2 in the polls after wins over Georgetown and Xavier. The Wildcats received five first-place votes this week.

Kansas remained at third for a second consecutive week followed by Baylor and Arizona.

Hot on the heels of the fifth-ranked Wildcats of Arizona are fellow Pac-12 schools UCLA and Oregon, who come in at sixth and seventh this week. Louisville is ranked 8th, West Virginia 9th and North Carolina rounds out the top-10

North Carolina is one of six Atlantic Coast Conference teams ranked in this week’s Top 25. Along with Louisville and UNC, Duke is ranked 12th and Virginia is 14th. Florida State and Notre Dame come in at 17th and 25th, respectively.

The Tar Heels, now 21-5 overall and 9-3 in ACC play, prepare for a matchup with North Carolina State in Raleigh on Wednesday before coming home to play Virginia on Saturday.
