UNC in the NBA: Vince Carter hits 2,000th career three-pointer

Vince Carter becomes fifth player in NBA history to hit 2,000 career three-pointers

After two Final Fours, a professional career spanning almost two decades, eight All-Star selections and nearly 25,000 points, Vince Carter still has a few more accomplishments up his sleeve.

On Wednesday night, Carter became just the fifth player in NBA history to hit 2,000 career three-pointers. He trails only Ray Allen, Reggie Miller, Jason Terry and Paul Pierce on the all-time list.

Although Carter came to prominence because of his high-flying, seemingly superhuman dunks, it’s his long-distance shooting that’s elongated his career and keeps him relevant after so many years.

After all, he’s one of just three active players that was selected in the 1998 NBA Draft. He, along with future Hall-of-Famers Dirk Nowitzki and Paul Pierce, are the longest tenured players in the league.

It was just last month that Carter hit his 1,989th career three, passing 10-time All-Star Jason Kidd for fifth-place in NBA history. Earlier in the season, he broke Michael Jordan’s record for the oldest player to score 20 or more points in a game off the bench.

And at 40 years old, he continues to impress onlookers. Time has taken some of his athletic ability and highlight reel dunks, but it’ll never touch his effort, approach and class.

In his 19th season, Carter is still playing an important role for the Memphis Grizzlies, who currently occupy sixth-place in the highly competitive Western Conference.

For the season, Carter is averaging 8.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. His 24,327 career points rank fourth among active players behind Nowitzki, Lebron James and Pierce.
