URI's Hassan Martin out for the rest of the season

Published Feb. 24, 2016 7:25 p.m. ET

Rhode Island had high expectations entering 2015-16, but the team's season has been marred with injuries.

E.C. Matthews, the top returning scorer from the Rams, tore his ACL in the first game of the year. Hassan Martin, a reigning first team All-Atlantic 10 selection in 2014-15, will reportedly join Matthews on the sideline.

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported on Wednesday evening that Martin will miss the remainder of the season with knee tendonitis. The 6-foot-7 junior was averaging 12.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game.

The Rams, one of the preseason favorites in the A10, has a 15-13 record and is currently in the middle of the pack in the conference standings.

Aside from winning the Atlantic 10 Tournament, URI's hopes for the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1999 have been delayed by a year. They'll be a favorite in 2016-17, returning Matthews, Martin, rising juniors Jared Terrell and Jarvis Garrett as well as Kuran Iverson.
