Valparaiso earns 20th win, tops Cleveland State 78-57 (Feb 09, 2017)
VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) Shane Hammink scored 15 points and Valparaiso collected its 20th win of the season and its 10 Horizon League victory with a 78-57 romp past Cleveland State on Thursday night.
The Crusaders bounced back after having an eight-game win streak snapped by an 86-69 loss to Green Bay on Saturday, and picked up their seventh-straight victory over the Vikings and their 11th in their last 13 meetings.
Valpo (20-5, 10-2) wasted little time getting back on track, racing to a 20-point halftime lead, 44-24.
Alec Peters and Jaume Sorolla, a freshman from Tortosa, Spain, each added 12 points as the Crusaders collectively shot 32 of 62 from the field (51.6 percent), including 7 of 22 from beyond the three-point arc. Valparaiso had 22 assists on 32 made baskets and held a 41-33 advantage on the glass.
Rob Edwards scored 15 points and Kenny Carpenter added 13 more off the bench for Cleveland State (7-18, 3-10).
