The games honor Dave Gavitt, a 2006 Basketball Hall of Fame inductee who spent most of his life dedicated to basketball in the Northeast. He played and coached at Dartmouth before moving to Providence, where he coached for 10 seasons. The Friars made the Final Four in 1973 under Gavitt's leadership. He was instrumental in the formation of the Big East Conference in 1979 and served as its first commissioner, until 1990. Gavitt died in 2011 at the age of 73.
