Western Carolina holds off The Citadel late in 84-80 win (Feb 22, 2017)
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Ashley Williams came off the bench to score 20 points and Western Carolina led wire-to-wire, posting an 84-80 win over The Citadel Wednesday night.
The Catamounts held a 49-31 lead at the break and maintained a double-digit advantage until the Bulldogs made it 74-65 on an Ezekiel Balogun free throw with 4:08 left.
Warren Sledge hit a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left to cut the Western Carolina lead to three, 83-80. Williams left the door open by missing three of four free throw attempts, but The Citadel missed two layups and turned the ball over in the closing seconds.
Onno Steger scored 15 points and Marc Gosselin scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Catamounts (8-21, 3-13 Southern Conference).
Preston Parks scored 19 points off the bench while Balogun and Zane Najdawi each contributed 15 points for The Citadel (9-20, 2-14).
