What's left on Gonzaga's schedule to achieve an undefeated regular season
Following No. 1 Gonzaga's 90-60 victory over Loyola Marymount on Thursday, most assumed that if the the No. 1 Bulldogs could get by No. 20 Saint Mary's on Saturday night, the 'Zags would cruise to an undefeated regular season.
Gonzaga head coach laughed off the question, telling reporters, "This has been going on for a month and a half."
That may be so, but the conversation will only pick up steam going forward now that Gonzaga beat Saint Mary's 74-64 Saturday night in Moraga, California, in a game that wasn't as close as the final score indicated. They are now 26-0 this season.
And while, as Few said, the conversation about Gonzaga's chances to go undefeated has been going on a while, it's only going to ramp up as they reach the home stretch.
Here are the 'Zags remaining regular season games:
Thursday, Feb. 16 vs. San Francisco
Saturday, Feb. 18 vs. Pacific
Thursday, Feb. 23 at San Diego
Saturday, Feb. 25 vs. BYU
Considering that the Zags already beat all four of those teams by double-digits (three of them on the road), it appears as though Few's club should cruise to wins in those games. Only BYU has the potential to give them any trouble: The Cougars are 17-9 overall and lost to Gonzaga by just 10 at home a few weeks ago. Then again, it's much different facing the Bulldogs in Spokane, as opposed to their own home court.
If Gonzaga can get through that stretch they would once again enter the WCC Tournament on Mar. 2 as the prohibitive favorites. The toughest matchup would be against Saint Mary's. But as good as the Gaels are, this is the same team that has lost to Gonzaga by double-digits twice this season.
To quote the infamous Ted Wells, it feels "more probable than not" that the 'Zags will enter the NCAA Tournament undefeated.
Only time will tell if this is the year Mark Few's club finally breaks through with the school's first-ever Final Four berth.
