Winthrop romps past NAIA Rio Grande for a 116-84 win

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) Keon Johnson, Xavier Cooks and Jimmy Gavin combined to score 70 points and Winthrop picked up a third-straight win by beating Rio Grande, a NAIA school from Ohio, 116-84 on Monday night.

The Eagles (9-3) now are 6-0 at home this season and have won 12 straight home games dating to last season.

Johnson, the only Eagle to reach double-figure scoring in all 12 games this season, finished with 25 points to pad his 21.6 average and topped 1,000 career points. Cooks finished with 24 points, more than 10 points above his per-game average and Garvin, who added 21, has scored 20 points or more in his last three games.

The Eagles shot 62.5 percent from the field on 45-of-72 shooting, including 12 of 29 from deep, while dishing off 21 assists and collecting a dozen steals.

Matt Rhodes scored 16 to lead Rio Grande.
