Wisconsin Basketball: Balanced attack leads Badgers to 69-51 victory over Chicago State

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team bounced back from Tuesday’s loss at Creighton nicely, defeating the Chicago State Cougars 69-51 at home Thursday night.

Vitto Brown led the way for the Badgers with 12 points, one of ten different players to score in the game. He also added three rebounds and connected on two three-pointers. Khalil Iverson added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.

Perhaps the biggest bright spot for the Badgers against the Cougars was the play of freshman guard D’Mitrik Trice. Head coach Greg Gard made a nice adjustment on the Cougars’ two-three matchup zone, bringing in Trice early to run point guard and moving the starter Bronson Koenig over the shooting guard position. Trice was able to find the holes in the defense early and often, contributing seven assists in 23 minutes, three shy of the all-time freshman record (10) set by Sam Okey.

The Badgers overcame a sluggish 8-0 deficit to start the game by going on a 19-0 run over the next nine minutes to take control of the game early. Wisconsin held Chicago State to just 35 percent shooting, despite allowing a game-high 26 points to Cougars’ guard Fred Simms Jr.

Chicago State (1-1) will be looking to improve off their 4-28 season from a year ago as they travel to Oakland to play the second of their 14th non-conference road games.

Wisconsin will pick up on their tough schedule by heading to Maui to take on Tennessee in the opening round game of the May Invitational.
