2016 SEC Football Legends: Remembering Jason Campbell

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Former Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell has been announced as part of the 2016 SEC Football Legends Class. We look back at his greatest achievements.

Jason Campbell is arguably one the greatest Auburn quarterbacks of all-time, and now he is being honored in this year’s SEC Football Legends Class.

I don’t think Auburn fans truly understand how special Jason Campbell was during his time at Auburn. Yes, he had possibly the greatest running back duo of all-time behind him, but he ran that offense with precision for three-plus years.

During that time he passed for almost 7,300 yards and 45 touchdowns passes, while setting a school record with 31 wins as an Auburn starter at quarterback.

He got better as a quarterback each year, and then in 2004 he led the Auburn Tigers to an SEC Championship and undefeated season. We all know Auburn was the best team in the country that year, so we’ll leave it at that.

He led an offense that ranked 18th in the nation that year scoring 32.1 points per game. Also in 2004 he threw for 2,700 yards and 20 touchdowns to just 7 interceptions, while rushing for three more touchdowns.

He went on to be named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year that season as he led the SEC in pass completion percentage at 69.4, while throwing the second most passes in the SEC.

He went on to spend nine years in the NFL where he started 79 games.

Jason Campbell wasn’t someone who was going to blow you away with his speed, but he was a smart quarterback that could make the big play when he needed to.

I would definitely take someone like Jason Campbell at quarterback for Auburn right now. He was someone who you could trust to throw the ball, instead of feeling on edge every time a pass goes up in the air.

Jason Campbell is one of my favorite Auburn football players of all-time, and I’m glad to see him receiving this honor of being inducted into the 2016 SEC Football Legends Class.
