2017-18 Egg Bowls will be back on Thanksgiving Night

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

In a release by Brett McMurphy of ESPN, it has been announced that the 2017 and 2018 iterations of the Egg Bowl will be played on Thanksgiving. This will bring lots of controversy and anger from many fans.

This tweet alone would be enough to set off many Bulldog fans today. Those against this move cite family reasons and difficulty in choosing between family and football. With this in mind, was this a wise decision by Scott Stricklin and Ross Bjork?

Personally, I believe this is more than a great move, it’s a phenomenal move. We will be back in the national spotlight on Thanksgiving night. Families will have the opportunity to eat with their families for lunch, then go out to the game and enjoy the evening together as a family. For those who cannot make it to the game, it’s a guaranteed nationally televised game.

For those of you saying, “It’s not our tradition!!!” I have one simple thing to say to you. The game has consistently fluctuated between Thanksgiving and non-Thanksgiving play. I remember back in the 90’s that the Egg Bowl was almost constantly on Thanksgiving, and I don’t remember much gnashing of teeth.

Now I may just be a young whippersnapper of a fan to some of you, but I believe I have valid points. I’m sure I’ll get many angry tweets saying how wrong I am in saying this. But, I believe this is something good for BOTH programs. Let’s be honest with each other, would you do it if it guaranteed us to be on ESPN or ESPN2 every year? If you say you wouldn’t, you’re lying to yourself.

This may not be a happy change for people who are creatures of habit, but suck it up and deal with it. A guaranteed Thanksgiving kickoff for the next two years is something I’m happy about, and will gladly deal with for as long as necessary. If you’re truly unhappy with this, then bless your little heart.
