3 things every BYU football fan should should have on their wishlist

The holidays are here and everyone is making their wishlists. BYU football fans are no exception.

The holidays are a special time of year. People are cheerful. Snow begins to fall. College football bowl season arrives. And of course, Santa comes.

It’s a time of giving, but hey, you deserve something too. After all, you’ve been supporting your BYU football team through thick and thin. After a season with so many heart attack wins (and losses) your wishlist might be filled with antacids and Bayer aspirin. But rest easy, the future is bright for BYU football.

Still, that doesn’t mean Cougar fans don’t want a little something under the tree.

Here are three things every BYU football fan should want for Christmas this year.

A crop of new BYU football recruits

This will be a little late, considering Signing Day isn’t until February. However, every BYU football fan should be excited to see head coach Kalani Sitake‘s first full recruiting class.

Sitake and his staff have a far different recruiting philosophy than that of Bronco Mendenhall and his staff. The results? Well, it’s still early, but Sitake seems to be a difference maker when it comes to snagging commits.

BYU football’s 2017 class has hardly taken its final shape, but it looks to be a good one.

The Cougars currently have 15 commits, five of which are 3-star recruits according to Rivals. Still, there are a number of big fish that remain to be hooked. After the departure of Mark Helfrich in Eugene, the Oregon Ducks have lost commits left and right. One of those commits – 3-star offensive lineman John Vaka – has already committed to the Cougars.

Another former Duck pledge to keep an eye on is Langi Tuifua, a 4-star defensive tackle. Tuifua decommited at the end of November, and BYU is one of a handful of schools he’s considering.

Regardless of who ends up coming to Provo next fall, there will be plenty of talent on the Cougars’ roster.

    Getting a win over Wyoming

    Jeff Swinger-USA TODAY Sports

A win over Wyoming means a 9-4 season in Sitake’s first year as a head coach. A loss means a bitterly disappointing 8-5 mark.

Things won’t be easy for the Cougars. Wyoming is a strong team and Tanner Mangum will be getting his first start since last season’s Las Vegas Bowl.

We’ve already broken down the Poinsettia Bowl matchup, but here’s the abridged version.

Wyoming isn’t a great team defensively (the Cowboys allow 213 rushing yards per game), is led by a great running back (Brian Hill has rushed for nearly 1,800 yards) and has lost three of its last four games.

The Cowboys nearly won the Mountain West Conference, and there’s still plenty of smack talk going on between the two fanbases about conference superiority and whatnot. So what better to wake up to Christmas morning than the memory of big bowl win?

    Some new threads

It’s pretty well known that Sitake isn’t a fan of the navy blue uniforms. He wanted to officially switch to royal blue, but the financial trouble came when BYU looked at the cost to change everything on campus from navy to royal.

So, royal was adopted as an official secondary color instead.

But navy wasn’t exactly featured, as the Cougars wore it in just three games this season (UCLA, Southern Utah and UMass). They primarily wore white, but sported the royal look against Utah and a blackout look against Utah State.

I’m not sure what type of options are available to the Cougars through Nike, but I would imagine there’s a lot on the table.

I know that many fans like the traditional look of sporting the same unis week in and week out, but different uniform combos go a long way in recruiting. Plus, there’s the old ‘look good, feel good, play good’ adage.

I’d love to see the royal come into play more often in 2017, plus the blackout look and maybe another alternate with a smoke gray (think these, only with royal blue).

Maybe white jerseys with royal blue accents are in play as well. I’m sure we’ll see something in 2017 to avoid the navy look. For that matter, there’s speculation that the Cougars will have something special for the bowl game on Dec. 21, but we’ll see.

Enjoy the holiday season and hopefully every BYU football fan will have these great presents to look forward to.
