ACC Football: Coastal Division Power Rankings Week 13
Another week of ACC Football, another round of Coastal Division Power Rankings
Week 13 was ridiculous.
Let’s start in the Big Ten with “The Game.” I feel for coach Harbaugh (and that’s tough I am a niners fan). His team got the bad end of some bad calls. A fifteen yard penalty for throwing your scorecard? Ridiculous. A no call pass interference on third down in double overtime? Ridiculous. A fourth and one that you stop only to get told you didn’t and then give up the game winning touchdown? Ridiculous.
Want to know what’s more ridiculous? What the committee is going to do with the Big Ten. If Ohio State gets in over a Penn State team that beat them, especially if the Nittany Lions win the Big Ten Championship, that is utterly ridiculous.
In the Pac-12 it is USC that has been ridiculous. The Trojans have won eight straight games, including beating both Colorado and Washington. The former two teams are representing the Pac-12 in the Championship game and not USC. Ridiculous.
In the Big 12, Texas needed just one win in their last three games to become bowl eligible. They went 0-3 in those games including losing to Kansas (in football this is bad). The Longhorns missed the bowl and their coach got fired. Ridiculous.
In the SEC, LSU was all kinds of ridiculous. First the Tigers think they have a deal with Tom Herman. Then they go out and beat A&M to end the season. Then the players rally around the interim head coach. Herman waivers, LSU punts, and Ed Oregeron gets the job of his dreams. Ridiculous.
So with that in mind this week’s ACC football Coastal Rankings will each have a ridiculous stat in them. I know these are a little later than usual but that’s what can happen after a week of ridiculous.

Virginia just collapsed this season. After starting the season 0-3 they won two games and were actually in line to salvage their season. Then the losing started and things went downhill quite quickly. The only positive was that Taquan Mizzell ended the season with 100 total yards in seven straight games. The Cavs of course went 0-7 in those games. The loss in Blacksburg ended the season for Virginia and new coach Bronco Mendenhall. They will have a lot of time to try to figure out what went wrong and hope it is salvageable from there.

Duke Blue Devils
(4-8, 1-7)
Last week: Lost 40-21 to MiamiLast rank: 6th
Duke still had an outside shot at a bowl bid with a win against Miami. Instead they failed to show up on the road for a second consecutive week. Daniel Jones did throw for 300 yards and three scores. However, the running game was abysmal and the Canes took advantage. Like Virginia, Duke will be sitting at home come bowl season. They can take solace in knowing that they cost their rivals a shot at the ACC Championship. They can also go back to doing what they do best, watching college basketball season.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
(8-4, 4-4)
Last week: Won 28-27 against GeorgiaLast rank: 5th
Georgia Tech looked like their season was coming undone earlier this year. They were 3-3 and a lot of people were comparing them to last season’s Jackets. Then Tech did something special. They won five of six and saved their season and their coach. That’s how the game at Georgia went. After being tied at halftime the jackets were down 13 going into the fourth. They responded with 14 points including the game winning touchdown, a six yard dive by Qua Searcy, with just 30 seconds remaining. Georgia Tech is going to a bowl game again after missing one last season.

North Carolina Tar Heels
(8-4, 5-3)
Last week: Lost 28-21 to NC StateLast rank: 1st
The Heels ended the season with a whisper. Needing to win out and hope for a Hokies loss, the Heels went 1-2 with both losses coming to their rivals. It wasn’t so much that they lost, but that they didn’t even look prepared to win either game. So a season that had hopes of an ACC Championship ends with a lesser bowl and a lot of question marks. This includes their head coach who is being rumored for several jobs. This past Friday Houston, Texas, and UNC all lost. All three had questions involving their head coach. Houston and Texas have had changes made. Is UNC next? It could explain a lot about how the Heels finished their season.

Miami Hurricanes
(8-4, 5-3)
Last week: Won 40-21 against DukeLast rank: 3rd
The Hurricanes ended their season with a fourth consecutive win. They did it against Duke and in doing so tied for second in the coastal. Brad Kaaya became Miami’s all-time leading passer with 396 yards and four touchdowns against the Blue Devils. The Canes eighth win also put them in better position for a better bowl as they are a more appealing choice for most bowls.

Pittsburgh Panthers
(8-4, 5-3)
Last week: Won 76-61 against SyracuseLast rank: 4th
Pitt might be the hottest team in the Coastal right now. After losing nail biters to Virginia Tech and UNC earlier Pitt has been on a roll. In their last game with Syracuse, the Panthers combined with the Orange to break the NCAA record for most total points in a game. The Panthers outscored the Orange by 15 despite being outgained by 24 yards, committing one more turnover, having 18 fewer first downs, and having the ball for 11 less minutes. Talk about ridiculous. The Panthers will be looking to get their ninth win on the season in their second consecutive bowl game under Coach Pat Narduzzi.
Next: The Commonwealth of Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech Hokies
(9-3, 6-2)
Last week: Won 52-10 against VirginiaLast rank: 1st
The Hokies were rewarded Friday with UNC’s loss to NC State. They didn’t need it as the ran all over the Cavaliers. In addition to outscoring Virginia by 42 points, Virginia Tech also outgained them by 332 yards while obtaining 15 more first downs in just five extra minutes of play. Tech will look to add a tenth win to their season with a win over Clemson in the ACC Championship Saturday. A win would guarantee the Hokies a new year’s six bowl while also making sure the ACC gets left out of the playoffs this season.
Well that does it for this week’s rankings. This will be my last football rankings of the year. Could things get any more ridiculous in ACC football? If the Hokies pull the upset then they answer is yes. So if you’re not from Blacksburg pull hard for the Tigers, because they are the ACC’s best chance again this season.
