ACC Football Standings: Tar Heels catch break with Virginia Tech loss
How does the ACC look after UNC’s win and Syracuse’s upset on Saturday?
Just a week ago, it looked as if UNC’s chances at another ACC Coastal Division title were down the drain.
But after beating Miami and then getting some help from Syracuse, the Tar Heels are in a good spot.
UNC is now tied atop the Coastal Division with Virginia Tech as both teams have one ACC loss on their resume. The Tar Heels still need to finish a game better than the Hokies to claim the title, unless there is a three-way tie. Then things get tricky.
After another week of football, lets take a look at the updated standings:
COASTAL
Team Conf. W/L OVR W/L
UNC 3-1 5-2
Pitt 2-1 5-2
Virginia Tech 2-1 4-2
Virginia 1-1 2-4
Miami 1-2 4-2
Geo. Tech 1-3 4-3
Duke 0-3 3-4
ATLANTIC
Team Conf. W/L OVR W/L
Clemson 4-0 7-0
Louisville 3-1 5-1
FSU 2-2 5-2
Wake 2-2 5-2
NC State 1-1 4-2
Cuse 1-2 3-4
BC 0-3 3-3
Week 8 games
Miami at Virginia Tech (Thursday)
NC State at Louisville
Syracuse at Boston College
UNC at Virginia
As you can see, the Week 8 slate is very small. Aside from the Tar Heels game, the biggest Coastal Division game comes on Thursday night when Miami plays Virginia Tech.
The Tar Heels could use a Hurricanes win, which would give them and the Hokies both 2 losses in conference play. With a win on Saturday, UNC would have just one loss and would win the division by winning out.
Pittsburgh has just one conference loss, to UNC, and are idle this week. They have a tough final stretch that includes Virginia Tech, Miami and Clemson. It would take a lot for them to come back and win the division.
