Points have been hard to come by for Boston College this season and it won’t get any easier this weekend when the Eagles (3-3, 0-3 ACC) face No. 5 Clemson (5-0, 2-0 ACC) in Death Valley.
Last weekend, Boston College lost its second straight game when it was shutout by Wake Forest, 3-0.
The Eagles offense has been reeling since the loss of starting quarterback Darius Wade and star running back Jon Hilliman to injury and will clash with an athletic Clemson team that ranks fifth in the ACC in scoring defense (16.6 ppg) and total defense (288.8 ypg).
“(Clemson defensive coordinator) Brent Venables has done an unbelievable job,” Boston College coach Steve Addazio said. “Everywhere he’s been the defense has been really good. He has a great scheme and you can tell that they are well put together.”
Last season the Tigers had arguably the best defense in the nation as it was led by future NFLers Vic Beasley and Stephone Anthony. Addazio felt this year’s group is just as effective.
“They’ve replaced a lot of guys, but I got to tell you that a lot of the guys (Clemson has) are playing with a lot of experience,” Addazio said. “… They still have guys like (safety) (Jayron) Kearse and (corner) (Mackensie) Alexander and I think (linebacker) Ben Boulware is a hell of a player. I really do. I think that guy is tough and he strikes. … They got players.”
Boston College hasn’t been so bad on the defensive side of the ball either. The Eagles currently lead the ACC in scoring defense (7.2 ppg) and total defense (140.3 ypg). That unit will be put to the test versus a Tigers offense that is led by the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, quarterback Deshaun Watson.
