Aggies put rushing attack on display against Arkansas

Texas A&M hasn’t had a truly loaded backfield during Kevin Sumlin’s tenure. This season, the Aggies have loads of weapons and it showed Saturday.

The Texas A&M Aggies continued to thrive in their balanced offense as they dropped Arkansas 45-24 on Saturday.

Quarterback Trevor Knight and the Aggies’ offense rolled up 597 yards of total offense on the Razorbacks. They built a reputation of throwing the football under Kevin Sumlin. However, this team plays a much more balanced attack. In terms of the run-pass play calling they were at 35-22. Both units used explosive plays to produce a ridiculous amounts of yards, but its the power running game that they’ve used all season.

Knight and Running backs Trayveon Williams and Keith Ford shredded Arkansas’ defense. Williams exploded for 153 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries. Knight led the team with 157 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries. His two touchdowns came on runs of 42 and 48 yards, and Ford added 55 yards on 10 carries. The Aggies’ offensive line embarrassed Arkansas’ defense as noted by its 10.6 yards per carry average.

It’s been an interesting journey for this Texas A&M squad. People wondered if Knight could really lead this offense. Not only has he led them, he has become one of the main reasons for their turnaround. A lot of the previous signal callers didn’t have his game-breaking speed. Regardless of his sometime erratic passing, he’s been the most dynamic passer since Johnny Manziel.

Furthermore, this stable of running backs presents so many mismatches. Ford and Williams are a perfect thunder and lightning attack. Also, the plethora of talent on the outside keeps defense honest. They are afraid of getting the top blown off the coverage. Despite all the hype around Sumlin’s past air attacks, this one looks to break the mold. It might be just what they needed to compete with the SEC’s best.
