AP Poll: Iowa Hawkeyes Travel to No. 20 Penn State
A look at the newest AP Poll, and what the College Football Playoff Ranking might look like
Four undefeated teams lost on Saturday: Nebraska, Baylor, West Virginia and Boise State. With those losses, the latter three fell out of the top-10 and only Nebraska has a legitimate shot of still making the College Football Playoff. Although, the Big Ten West leader will likely need to win out to do so.
With the first College Football Playoff Ranking coming out on Tuesday, this week’s AP Poll carries less weight, but it does give us a hint of what the first CFP Ranking might look like. One thing that is almost certain are the four teams with the upper hand on making the Playoff: Alabama, Michigan, Clemson and Washington.
Alabama had a bye week and Michigan beat an underwhelming Michigan State team, but Clemson and Washington both beat ranked teams, proving that they’re real title contenders.
With Wisconsin’s win over Nebraska, they moved back into the top-10. The Badgers are eighth in this week’s AP Poll with the Cornhuskers one spot behind. The Big Ten have four teams in the top-10 again, and five in the top-20.
After being ranked 24th in last week’s poll, Penn State moved up four spots to number 20 after a dominating win over Purdue. The Iowa Hawkeyes travel to Happy Valley this Saturday to take on the newly top-20 Penn State Nittany Lions. It will be the Hawkeyes second game in a row against a ranked team.
Oklahoma State (22) and Washington State (25) are both new to the AP Poll top-25 this week. The Cowboys are coming off an impressive upset win over West Virginia and Washington State had a come from behind win over Oregon State.
The highest ranked non-Power Five school is Western Michigan, who come in at number 17. Boise State fell from 13 to 24 after their loss to Wyoming, which ruined their perfect season.
Navy and Tennessee both fell out of the ranking after getting upset. Navy lost to South Florida and Tennessee lost to South Carolina.
