Appalachian State returns kickoff for 94-yard TD vs Toledo

The Appalachian State Mountaineers lost their second-half lead against the Toledo Rockets, but got it back immediately on a 94-yard kickoff return.

Bowl season finally kicked off on Saturday, and there were plenty of fireworks from some of the games that may have been flying under the radar. The Camellia Bowl between the Appalachian State Mountaineers and Toledo Rockets was no exception.

Any time that Appalachian State took the lead on Saturday, Toledo quickly tied it back up. In the third quarter with the Rockets down 21-14, Toledo quarterback Logan Woodside was able to find Cody Thompson for a four-yard touchdown to tie things back up.

Unfortunately for Toledo, they were quickly trailing once again.

Immediately following the touchdown, Appalachian State’s Darrynton Evans fielded the kickoff and was able to take it back 94 yards for the touchdown, putting the Mountaineers up 28-21. You can watch a video of the kickoff return touchdown courtesy of ESPN below.

Once again, however, the Rockets were able to answer. In just five plays, the Rockets marched down the field for a 75-yard drive that was capped off by a one-yard Kareem Hunt score, tying things back up again at 28-28.

Both teams might not have gotten the national attention that College Football Playoff contenders got, but both the Mountaineers and Rockets came into the Camellia Bowl with respectable 9-3 records.

This was definitely a bowl game between evenly-matched teams, and regardless of the outcome, it was a wild and hard-fought game from both programs. Some players, like Toledo’s Kareem Hunt, are hoping a national spotlight will help them once the NFL draft comes around.
