Arkansas WR Drew Morgan makes the most of his opportunity
As if the upset loss to Toledo wasn't bad enough, the Razorbacks lost their No. 1 receiver to injury in the game. With Keon Hatcher out, Drew Morgan, an unlikely contributor to that point, has really come on for the Arkansas.
Against Texas Tech, Morgan caught four passes for 45 yards and a touchdown. The following week against Texas A&M, Morgan put on a clinic, catching eight passes for 155 yards and another touchdown.
Now entering the Tennessee game, Morgan will likely be quarterback Brandon Allen's new No. 1 target.
"It's no surprise to me," receivers coach Michael Smith told Whole Hog Sports. "I don't want to sound like I'm shocked that Drew did it. I keep telling everybody I get to see these guys every day. Here's a guy who took advantage of an opportunity, and I've just got to keep him playing like that."
His play has helped him earn the trust of not only his position coach but of his quarterback, currently the SEC's second leading passer.
"He's such a smart guy," Allen said. "He can get himself open. He sees coverages well. He knows how to stem his routes, how to run his routes to get open.
"He's just so smart about knowing where to settle or where to run through holes, and find gaps in the defense to get himself open. He thinks with the QB, and that helps me be on the same page with him when we're throwing the ball."
With tight end Hunter Henry working the middle of the field, expect Tennessee to focus their efforts on stopping Morgan on the outside. Although from the way Bret Bielema tells it, Morgan could potentially line up all over the field for Arkansas.
"I love the kid," Bielema said. "He lacks nothing in confidence. I've been sitting in wide receiver meetings the last couple of weeks and he knows every position."
