Asberry resigns as Texas Southern coach
(STATS) - Texas Southern has begun a search for a coach following Darrell Asberry's resignation after four seasons in which his teams won only 12 games.
Asberry, 43, says he will pursue other coaching opportunities.
After taking over the program in 2012, Asberry helped guide Texas Southern through several years of NCAA sanctions and helped boost the Tigers' academic standing. But his teams posted only a 12-31 record, including 9-27 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
His best season was a year ago, when the Tigers went 5-7. This season, they lost their final four games to finish 3-7.
"I appreciate Texas Southern and (vice president for intercollegiate athletics) Dr. Charles McClelland for all that they've done for me and my family and the support they've given me," said Asberry, who coached Division II Shaw University for six years prior to Texas Southern.
