ASU Football: Scouting Report, Texas Tech Red Raiders

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

With the football season officially upon us, it is time to scout out what sort of competition ASU will see this weekend in the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Both Texas Tech and Arizona State come into this game 1-0 and looking to prove that they can be contenders this season in their given conference.

Both teams are offensive powers that lack defensive discipline at times, which means expect both teams to give up a ton of yards.

But who are the players on Texas Tech that ASU should keep an eye on to ensure a victory? Below are two key players that the Sun Devils need to keep their eye on.

More from Devils in Detail

    1. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes

If you have been trying to do your own scouting of Texas Tech, there is no way you haven’t heard about Mohomes.

Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks in the FBS and he is even a dark horse candidate for the Heisman award in some camps. He knows how to find his receivers and has great velocity behind his throws.

Mahomes is who Texas Tech relies on to score points, and rightfully so. Last season he had 10 300-yard passing games and ended the season with 4,653 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes.

With stats like that, it is easy to tell that this kid is not only special, but dangerous as well.

If the ASU defense thought they had a touch test with Case Cookus this past week, they just got an even tougher test in Patrick Mahomes.

    2. Wide Receiver Reginald Davis

Davis comes into this season as the most productive returning wide receiver from last season.

Davis ended last season with 38 receptions for 536 yards, averaging 14.1 yards per catch. He knows how to get open and he will be a big target for Mahomes during Saturday’s game.

The ASU secondary will have a long night if they are unable to stop a Mahomes-Davis connection.
