Auburn AD Jay Jacobs: 'There's no excuse for going 6-6'

If you think Auburn fans are upset with the last place finish after preseason national title game expectations, Tiger athletic director Jay Jacobs is right there with you. While Jacobs isn't happy regarding Gus Malzahn's worst season as Auburn head coach, he is not ready to panic just yet.

Jacobs joined the Opening Drive on WJOX-FM Tuesday to discuss the disappointing season but also to put the Tigers' recent history in perspective for any fans ready to immediately pull the plug on Malzahn after only three seasons.

"Our history has been that we haven't been consistent, but fortunately the last five years we've been able to hire two guys and go to the national championship for those two years and win one of them," Jacobs said. "And Gus was the offensive coordinator in 2010, so when people talk about hot seat, hey, in this business, everybody is on the hot seat every day. That's what you sign up for. That's what makes this league really good."

Jacobs also pointed out while Auburn had a poor season this year, the Tigers are one of only four SEC teams to win a national title in the last nine seasons.

"Well, there are 10 others that haven't, so sometimes we lose a little bit of perspective of how tough it is," Jacobs said. "But I believe ... there has to be some consistency. Hey, look, there's no excuse for going 6-6 at Auburn, even though you lost a couple of games by one possession or less. But still you have a change in quarterback. We have to have some consistency in what we're doing. I know that Gus is a proven guy who can get that done."
