Auburn Football Cracks Top 25 for First Time in Over a Year

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Since Auburn football lost to LSU on September 19 of last season, they have failed to be ranked in the AP Top 25 until now.

After a blowout win on the road against Mississippi State, Auburn football now finds themselves inside the AP Top 25 for the first time in over a year coming in at number 23.

Last season Auburn football started the season ranked sixth in the country, but a couple of ugly wins, followed up by an ugly loss to LSU, quickly dropped them out of the Top 25.

They never were able to get back into the rankings a season ago, and after starting this season 1-2 it looked like it wasn’t going to happen this year either.

However, an impressive win at home against LSU, followed up by a blowout win on the road over Mississippi State was enough to convince the voters that the Tigers are the 23rd best team in the country right now.

If you look at the schedule Auburn has faced, it’s really amazing that they are 4-2 and 2-1 in the SEC.

Their only two losses are to teams in the top six (Clemson and Texas A&M).

I think this ranking is very deserving, and hopefully Auburn just continues to climb even higher.

After this win a friend asked me if we would be ranked, and I said it would depend on who dropped out. The week before the AP poll had us ranked 30th, so a move up to 23 is quite the jump.

I thought the voters might wait and see how we do in a couple of weeks against Arkansas – who is ranked one spot ahead of Auburn in the polls.

However, with Stanford, North Carolina, UCLA and Colorado all losing, it opened up the door for Auburn to jump inside the top 25.

Now I know this doesn’t mean much, and if we don’t beat Arkansas it’s not going to matter, but I’m glad to see Auburn getting the recognition they deserve.

They’ve started out the season against one of the toughest schedules in football, and they’ve fought through the storm and survived.

There is still much work left to be done, but entering the top 25 is a nice pat on the back for a good start to the season.
