Auburn Football Recruiting: Shivers Commits; LBs To Watch

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Here we give our Auburn football recruiting update for this week as Shivers makes his commitment to Auburn, and linebackers to watch.

Even with Auburn’s 2017 recruiting class largely in flux, that didn’t stop the football program from picking up its third commitment — all from the Sunshine State — for 2018: ultra-fast running back Shaun Shivers out of Chaminade–Madonna College Preparatory in Hollywood, Fla.

The highest-rated commitments — and among the leaders — of Auburn’s 2018 . . .

. . . and 2017 . . .

. . . classes both weighed in.

Presently evaluated as a top 200 recruit by Rivals, the Tigers coaching staff is no doubt looking forward to taking advantage of their newest pledge’s blazing speed in multiple ways, including running back and slot receiver. Think Eli Stove’s first-offensive-snap touchdown against Arkansas.

Shivers won’t be an every down back, not with his size of 5-foot-5 and 170 pounds, but truly elite speed like his is a killer on the football field, particularly in the Gus Malzahn offense. Again: Think Stove’s first-offensive-snap touchdown against Arkansas.

To put it into perspective, two of the fastest players in recent Auburn history, Corey Grant and Onterio McCalebb, had personal high school bests of 10.48 and 10.90 seconds in the 100 meters, respectively.

Shivers recorded a 10.47 on April 2.

Auburn Commitments — Class of 2018
  Name   State   Rank*
  QB Joey Gatewood   Fla.   12
  RB Shaun Shivers   Fla.   195
  DE Daquan Newkirk   Fla.   4-star
*Highest among 247, ESPN, Rivals, and Scout

Now with a strong trio in place as a foundation for 2018’s class, the Auburn coaching staff needs to close strong in 2017 over the next few months — and they may be doing their best recruiting on the football field right now.

If that continues, their momentum on the recruiting trail will mount.

Two to watch? Kenney “K.J.” Britt (No. 117/Rivals) of Oxford, Ala., and Tyler Taylor (No. 200/Rivals) from Lanier High in Georgia.

With Will Ignont (No. 189/247Sports) announcing his commitment to Tennessee yesterday, the linebacker position for 2017 becomes clearer for Auburn, with Britt and Taylor appearing to be two players the Tigers would love to add to their current pledges at the position: Birmingham’s Tadarian Moultry (No. 91/247Sports) and Chandler Wooten (No. 231/ESPN) out of Georgia’s North Cobb High.

Ignont’s recruitment has been one of the more all-over-the-place circuses of the cycle — and that Ferris Wheel will likely continue to spin, even after giving the Volunteers his verbal — so it’s doubtful that Auburn or linebackers coach Travis Williams was surprised at his decision.

The Tigers have been chasing Britt heavily for some time now. Auburn was perceived to be Britt’s leader early on, but then things seemed to shift toward Georgia. As he has visited each of the schools, things have tilted back and forth — or at least that’s the perception.

As for Taylor, who has attended a pair of games at Jordan-Hare Stadium this year, he will take his official visit to Auburn on December 9.
