Auburn Football vs. Miss. St.: Strong First Half Leads to Blowout Win

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Auburn football jumped out to a 35-0 lead in the first half against Mississippi State and never looked back as they blew out the Bulldogs 38-14.

The first half was exactly what you want to see from Auburn football as they played a perfect first and second quarter against Mississippi State.

A couple of our keys before the game included setting the tone early, and scoring in the red-zone. Auburn did exactly that in the first half as they scored four offensive touchdowns, which kept the cowbells silent.

You knew this game was over once Auburn reached 28 points, as there was no way our defense was giving up any more than 20 points to Mississippi State.

They bottled up Nick Fitzgerald and shutdown the running game. I think he was exposed a little bit in the passing game today as he looked terrible throwing the football.

Also, Mississippi State must not watch film on Carlton Davis because they kept trying to throw his way in the first half, but that was shutdown.

The only negative from the first half was that Kerryon Johnson left with an injury after just three carries and never returned. He was stretching on the sideline and trying to get back in the game, but I think the coaches elected to keep him out because they saw the way this game was going.

It made since to let him rest with the bye week coming up, and Kamryn Pettway was carrying the load by himself just fine. He had a record 27 carries in the first half, and finished with 39 carries for 169 yards and 3 touchdowns.

After a crucial drop in the first half that led to an interception, Tony Stevens made some nice catches and continues to be Sean White’s go-to target.

Speaking of White, he started out the game 11-of-13 and looked brilliant throwing the football. He didn’t really get a chance to air it out in the second half as finished with just 18 attempts. I wish we would have let him continue to throw the ball and get comfortable.

Defensively Auburn was lights out in the first half, playing probably their best half of football all season. The defensive line absolutely dominated up front.

The only person who I thought struggled in this game a bit was Tre’ Williams. He missed a ton of tackles that he normally comes up with.

As for the second half, I thought Auburn put it in curise control on offense and on defense. That’s easy to do when you’re up 35-0 at halftime. Still, I would have liked to have seen them put together at least one nice touchdown drive.

Overall, you couldn’t have asked for a better outcome for Auburn’s first road game. They set the tone early and never allowed Mississippi State to feel like they had a chance in this game.
