Auburn linebacker situation remains unclear, competitive
Among the interest takeaways from Auburn's first depth chart, which was released Tuesday, was sophomore linebacker Tre' Williams moving into a co-starter spot alongside seniors Cassanova McKinzy and Kris Frost.
New defensive coordinator Will Muschamp had declined to name starters at the linebacker spots prior to Tuesday, and now it seems that there's a reason why: There are three players essentially even with each other for two inside linebacker spots.
At his press availability Tuesday, coach Gus Malzahn said not to "read too much into the 'or'" on the depth chart. According to AL.com, Malzahn added, "We'll see what happens once we get out there and play and see who's playing well and go from there."
McKinzey was second on the team last season with 91 tackles and led the Tigers with 11 tackles for loss, while Frost was third on the team with 87 tackles and second with 10 tackles for loss.
Williams, playing primarily behind Frost at weakside linebacker, had 16 tackles last year while appearing in all 13 games.
"Coach Muschamp has him knowing both those positions," Malzahn reportedly said of Williams, "and they rotated a lot in fall camp. I think you'll see the same thing the first game."
