Auburn releases depth chart; RB Thomas starter, WR Burton gone

Auburn on Tuesday released its depth chart for Saturday's season opener against Louisville, and while there no huge surprises, there was definitely an emphasis on youth.

As noted by coach Gus Malzahn during his Tuesday press availability, there are eight freshmen on the two-deep. Among the most notable: big-time defensive end recruit Byron Cowart, who reportedly impressed throughout camp and will be counted on to make a pass-rushing impact immediately. Note that the number of freshmen cited by Malzahn does not including running back Kerryon Johnson, whom Malzahn said also will play.

Speaking of running back, one of the most competitive positions on the team, sophomore Roc Thomas earned the top spot on the depth chart. Malzahn reiterated, though, that fellow sophomore Peyton Barber and highly touted juco recruit Jovon Robinson also will get regular snaps.

At receiver, Duke Williams is listed as a starter after having recently returned from suspension, but Malzahn clarified that Williams' spot on the depth chart not does not necessarily mean that he will start against Louisville.

Additionally, Malzahn said backup receiver Myron Burton is no longer with the program. He called Burton's departure "mutual" and said that there are several versatile receivers on the roster who can be shuffled to help fill the void. Burton, a redshirt freshman, was the MVP of the A-Day spring scrimmage with seven catches for 124 yards and a touchdown.

Captains were not announced, but Malzahn said that decision would be coming soon. Beyond that, it's all about getting a young team ready for the high expectations that await it.

"We have to grow up in a hurry," Malzahn said, according to AL.com. "We're going to have to overcome those growing pains early and play solid football in a short period of time."
