Auburn's Malzahn: QB Jeremy Johnson lost his confidence

Confidence can be a strange thing. One minute it's here and the next ...

Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn wouldn't commit to saying confidence was quarterback Jeremy Johnson's only problem at the moment, but the loss of his confidence did indeed play a part in his benching.

"I think it was a little bit of a lot of things," Malzahn said according to AL.com. "I would say confidence is one thing, there's no doubt. But I think it's a little bit of everything.

"We just felt like it was time to make a change and go with Sean White, give him an opportunity. We really feel like Sean has earned that right also. Jeremy will keep working and Jeremy will be just fine."

Malzahn continues to support Johnson. Despite his recent struggles, his coach isn't ready to give up on him. Johnson will be the backup for Saturday's Mississippi State game. If White goes down, expect Johnson to once again take the field.

"Any time you make quarterback changes, it's extremely tough," Malzahn said. "It's just a matter that we're encouraging Jeremy to keep working and we really expect him to. He's got a lot of champion in him and we're going to be there to support him. His teammates have responded, too. So he's going to keep working hard to improve and we really expect him to do that."
