Baylor Football: What should happen to the Bears' program?
While in college, I saw Baylor football go from laughing stock to champion and now all those wins make me very uncomfortable.
I am a Baylor fan. I attended Baylor University and made great friends and had a great experience there. When I was a freshman, the Baylor football team was coming off a 3-9 season and had just fired its head coach. In comes Art Briles from the University of Houston to right the ship.
A law suit was filed against Baylor University this week citing horrific activities allegedly committed by Baylor football players. The law suit joins other law suits filed by former Baylor students who claim they were sexually assaulted by Baylor football players. These suits have a horrific theme and that is one of indifference and neglect by those in power at Baylor.
As a Baylor fan I am having a hard time getting excited about the upcoming season. I think Matt Rhule was a home run hire and that the players there now were not involved and should not be treated as if they were. But there is a dark and ominous cloud that still hovers over Baylor football.
How to answer the Baylor question
I ask myself how should I approach the upcoming season. On one hand, everyone involved has moved on in one way or another. But on the other hand many in the university administration have not.
To me the answer to the Baylor question is you have to compartmentalize. I understand that current staff had an unenviable task of rebuilding a Baylor program that was at top of food chain just a few short seasons ago. But at the same time we must commit to holding those accountable who fostered a culture that allowed such unforgivable acts to happen.
