Beamer: Duke coach David Cutcliffe has done one of the best jobs ever

It wasn’t so long ago that Duke was the laughing stock of the college football world, but lately it’s the Blue Devils that are having the last laugh.

Duke has come a long way since its epic 23-game losing streak (1999-2001) thanks to the work of seventh-year coach David Cutcliffe, who has definitely impressed Virginia Tech’s legendary coach Frank Beamer.

“I really think Dave Cutcliffe has done one of the great coaching jobs over a period of time,” Beamer said. “Duke’s really changed who they are and what they are and how they play during my period of time here.

“It’s a credit to everyone at Duke. This program has got some really good players that play well.”

Beamer continued.

“I’m really impressed. I’ve seen it change from the time I got here playing Duke to now playing Duke. How you see them is quite a bit different,” Beamer said. “Today they are an established team. A team that goes to bowl games. It’s a team that has good players that play very efficient.

“Like I said, I really think Coach Cutcliffe has done one of he great jobs ever at a university and changing that university and the way they play.”

This Saturday the No. 23 Blue Devils (5-1, 2-0 ACC) will play at Virginia Tech (3-4, 1-2 ACC) at 3:30 p.m. and Beamer said it’s imperative his team plays a mistake-free game.

“We understand we have to go win it,” Beamer said. “They’re not going to do something to give you the game or help you win it. You have to go do it yourself. We understand that perfectly.”
