Bears QB sees OU holes: 'I think there's some things we can attack'
Baylor quarterback Jarrett Stidham enters the pressure-cooker Saturday with No. 12 and revenge-minded Oklahoma coming to McLane Stadium.
The Sooners have been embarrassed by the Bears in consecutive seasons, and now this matchup goes beyond personal pride to playoff dreams. No. 6 Baylor and Oklahoma both have them. The Sooners definitely won't any longer if they lose this one, and the two-time Big 12 champion Bears could also be cooked if they don't win.
At the center of it all is Stidham, the impressively mature true freshman who has stepped in as the starter to replace the injured Seth Russell. Stidham showed poise beyond his years in his first career start at Kansas State, a 31-24 victory that he salted away late with a key completion up the middle.
So how did Stidham begin his preparations for the Sooners? He spent the weekend at his family's dear lease, he said.
"Opening weekend," he told reporters this week.
While there, he said he started watching film on Oklahoma, which leads the Big 12 in scoring defense, allowing fewer than 19 points a game. Baylor's offense averaged 61.1 points a game before scoring half that against K-State, whose ground game considerably slowed down the game and reduced Baylor's possessions.
The spotlight will shine brightly on the 19-year-old Stidham on Saturday, and how he performs will greatly determine if Baylor's undefeated season will continue for at least another week.
"We'll just keep doing our thing,” Stidham said. “I've watched quite a bit tape on them. I think there's some things we can attack.”
