Big 12 recruiting news and notes: Five-star Baron Browning on commitment watch

Scout.com provides the latest recruiting news in the Big 12.

Prospect of the week: Kennedy Brooks

Scout four-star running back Kennedy Brooks, a 5’11”, 185-pounder from Mansfield (Texas) High is the Big 12 Region Prospect of the Week. The Oklahoma Sooners commit is the first prospect to win the honor on consecutive weeks in 2016. He deserves it after rushing for 320 yards and seven touchdowns in a second round TXHSFB playoff win. Brooks and his Tigers teammates are set to face off against fellow Oklahoma commit Charleston Rambo and Cedar Hill (Texas) High in the third round. Brooks could come in early and compete for playing time in Norman, Okla., as a true freshman in 2017.

Prospect on the rise: Deven Lamp

Lamp, an Iowa State Cyclones commit since late June, has helped Cedar Hill to a 10–2 record as the Longhorns enter this week's Texas Class 6A Division II third-round matchup against district rival Mansfield (Texas) High. So far in Cedar Hill's 12 games, Lamp has recorded 42 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble and seven quarterback hurries. Lamp possesses an impressive 6’4”-plus frame and gained 20–30 pounds during the off-season leading up to his senior year. That said, he still has ample space on his tall, long frame to add significant bulk in college.

Commit of the week: Trey Sterling

Standout Trey Sterling of Sunnyvale (Texas) High wasted little time committing after getting an offer from Oklahoma State, picking the Cowboys right after securing an offer. Schools ranging from Texas, Texas Tech, North Texas and Army had shown interest in Sterling. His actual offers at the time he committed to Oklahoma State were from Colorado State, Arkansas State, Texas State, Dartmouth, Army, and Navy. Sterling, who is rated as a Scout three-star prospect and was more of an athlete in high school, will play free safety once he arrives in college.

Commitment watch: Baron Browning

You can go ahead and put the five-star outside linebacker from Kennedale (Texas) High on commit watch as his Nov. 29 decision date approaches and he only has one official visit remaining with Ohio State before he makes his announcement. Browning has made previous stops in at UCLA, Alabama, Florida State and Michigan. In the Big 12 he has TCU—the school where his father, Barry Browning, starred—listed in his final six. He has visited the TCU campus more than a dozen times this year, so it will be very interesting to see whom he picks in the end. He will be announcing that final decision on his father’s birthday.
