BYU football: Tom Holmoe gives speech, basically says nothing

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe released a “State of the Program” address on Friday morning. While it was billed as a “special announcement,” it was anything but.

“Yeah, so BYU football and all of BYU’s other athletic programs are really awesome and the fans are awesome and we don’t need the Big 12 and everything is totally going to be okay.”

That was basically the gist of Holmoe’s “State of the Program” speech today.

The BYU athletic director reassured the fan base that the Big 12’s decision to not expand won’t hurt BYU football and said the Cougars will continue to throw their hat in the ring every time Power 5 expansion talk starts up.

He also gave a lengthy shout out to the fans, thanking them for traveling nationwide to watch the Cougars play and reminded them that BYU football is one of just two programs in the country to have every game broadcast on national television (the other is Notre Dame).

Really, there was nothing earth shattering here. Everything he talked about were things that most BYU football fans – and BYU fans in general – already know about. They know BYU’s deal with ESPN is making Independence sustainable. They know that BYU has a storied athletic program, and a worldwide fan base.

But, it was a nice gesture to reach out to the fans after they waited and worried for months over the Big 12’s will-they-won’t-they attitude.

It would still be really nice to see BYU release their pitch to the Big 12 like Houston and Cincinnati did, but I’m not holding my breath on getting something like that. BYU likes to play things close to the vest.
