BYU's Carter helping fill 'huge, huge vacancy' at running back

Published Aug. 12, 2015 10:52 a.m. ET

As a long-time walk-on, BYU senior running back Nate Carter doesn’t receive a scholarship check.

But that doesn't stop him from contributing on the field, especially now that star running back Jamaal Williams is a distant memory.

Carter is taking snaps with the first-team offense in fall camp and is expected to take on an expanded role this season — even though he doesn’t receive many of the perks of his teammates who do have scholarships.

“Boy, he’s dependable and he’s always where you need him to be,” offensive coordinator Robert Anae told the Deseret Morning News. “That’s a huge plus, especially at a time like this when we have a huge, huge vacancy at the running back spot to fill. Nate Carter was reliable and standing right there.”
