BYU's window is closing fast

Published Apr. 24, 2015 2:47 p.m. ET

Bronco Mendenhall has been determined to get BYU into a Power Five conference for years, and now BYU isn't alone in its quest for the inclusion. In an ESPN poll taken in October, BYU was voted the most worthy of that opportunity.

This season the Cougars have several Power Five teams on the schedule: Nebraska, UCLA, Michigan and Missouri. If they play well against them, get a few wins, and beat everyone else, they could find themselves in just the right position. The incoming changes to the conference title game rules by 2016, however, could take away some of their leverage.

Mendenhall knows this and he has given fans a time table for inclusion: “If someone were to force me, I’d say three years. It has to happen within three,” he told KSL's Greg Wrubell.
