Cal has strong candidates for assistant opening

Published May. 1, 2015 2:05 p.m. ET

Cal head coach Sonny Dykes spoke for the first time publicly about the situation involving Pierre Ingram, an assistant coach at the school.

Ingram, the teams recruiting coordinator and receiver's coach, was arrested on April 16th on his contract was not renewed by the university.

The Bears have replaced Ingram with Burl Toler III for the time being, who was the teams quality control and special teams assistant. Toler is a candidate to replace Ingram; however, Dykes said he's getting interest from around the country.

“It’s an unusual time of the year to hire a coach,” Dykes said, according to Mike Vernon of the San Francisco Chronicle. “But I’ve been really pleased with the people that are interested in the job. I think it kind of speaks to how people view the program, maybe from a coaching or maybe from a national standpoint, that we’re kind of up and coming.”

Dykes will likely make the hire before fall practices get up and running in August.
