Charlie Strong fired after three seasons as Texas Longhorns head coach
The end is officially here for Charlie Strong as Texas, after weeks of speculation. He was fired Saturday morning after meeting with school officials.
Although there were reports that Strong still might be able to save his job prior to Friday’s home game against in-state rival TCU, a 31-9 loss likely sealed his fate. Texas finishes the 2016 season with a disappointing 5-7 record overall and a 3-6 record in the Big 12.
In three seasons with the Longhorns, Strong went 16-21 – never finishing with a winning record and going to only one bowl game (a loss in the Texas Bowl in 2014).
Houston’s Tom Herman reportedly will be announced as the next head coach at Texas on Saturday afternoon.
Herman also had been pursued by the LSU Tigers, but they will announce today that they will hire interim coach Ed Orgeron on a full-time basis.
Strong has two years remaining on his contract with Texas and reportedly has a buyout worth more than $10 million.
