Charlie Strong on Coaching at Texas: 'I Will Never Regret It'

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 5:32 p.m. ET

During his introductory press conference for USF, former Texas head coach Charlie Strong spoke about his time in Austin.

Charlie Strong went through three tumultuous season, as the Texas football head coach before being fired in November. He compiled a 16-21 record, while never having a winning season (6-7 in 2014, 5-7 in 2015, 5-7 in 2016). The poor results led to Strong’s ousting and Tom Herman’s hiring, but it wouldn’t take the former long to resurface as a head coach.

Just weeks after this happened, the University of South Florida would hire the 56-year-old to take on the same position he had at Texas. They awarded him a five-year deal, which will also see Strong receive $5.2 million in each of the next two years from his former employer.

Recently, at Strong’s first USF press conference, he spoke about his time at Texas. According to 247 Sports, from what it sounds like, he doesn’t have an issue with anything that happened over the past three years:

“I learned a lot, I coached outstanding players, I met many, many great people there and learned as a coach during my time at Texas. It was a great experience for me. It was a great experience for my family. It was one that I will never regret.”

From what is being said publicly, Strong doesn’t seem upset with his coaching tenure at Texas. That may not be the case behind closed doors, but he’s at least keeping a positive attitude about everything that has happened, including over the last six weeks of the season where the pressure seemed intense.

Charlie Strong now steps into a lesser spotlight at USF as he’ll coach in the American Athletic Conference. He also gets to lead a team that went 10-2 under former head man Willie Taggart, who left for the same position at Oregon. The pressure will still be there for Strong to succeed, but the media will probably back away from him and keep a close eye on Herman as the months go on.
