We are going to begin giving out our regular season Clemson football awards as the season comes to a close.

Freshman of the year: Dexter Lawrence

To all of the true Clemson fans out there this is no surprise. Dexter Lawrence was highly anticipated coming into this year mainly because he is a staggering 6’5, 340 pound true freshman.

As soon as he stepped on campus, Dexter was the biggest defensive lineman on the team. Lawrence has made his presence felt from day one. In his college debut against Auburn, Dexter Lawrence recorded 7 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 tackle for loss. The Goliath freshman has done nothing but improve since that day. On the year, Lawrence has 46 tackles (fourth on the team), 3.5 sacks, and 6 tackles for loss; Dexter has also blocked 2 kicks.

Clemson continues to reload along the defensive line. Christian Wilkins was a force on the Tigers defensive line as a freshman last year. No offense to Slash, but, Dexter Lawrence makes his freshman year look average. Lawrence has already lapped Christian Wilkins in tackles, sacks, and tackles for loss with two games left to go in the regular season.

Any form of production from a freshman is exciting. Lawrence is not just contributing, he is one of the best players on this Clemson Tigers defense. The future is very bright, not only for this young man, but for Clemson’s defense as a whole.

Dexter Lawrence’s  personality may be as big as the man himself. You can see his playful nature in his impromptu interview of Brent Venables

Or in his snug Power Ranger outfit (he’s the one in the pink)
