Clemson holds on to top spot in CFP rankings, UNC makes first appearance
The second College Football Playoff rankings of the year were released on Tuesday night and it turns out Clemson’s 23-13 victory over No. 16 Florida State was enough to keep the Tigers (9-0) in the top spot for another week.
There was speculation that Alabama (8-1), who was ranked No. 4 in last week’s poll, might get the top spot after it downed then-ranked No. 2 LSU, 30-16 on Saturday. Instead, the Tide landed the No. 2 spot in the latest rankings.
Meanwhile, Florida State (7-2), held steady at the No. 16 spot for the second straight week.
The red-hot Tar Heels (8-1) surged into the CFP rankings for the first time this season at the No. 23 spot thanks to their 66-31 thumping of archrival Duke on Saturday. The win was North Carolina’s eighth straight.
Defending national champions Ohio State (9-0) remained No. 3 in the rankings, while Notre Dame (8-1), whose lone loss of the season came at the hands of Clemson, took the No. 4 spot.
LSU (7-1) got bounced out of the top four an fell all the way back to No. 9, while undefeated Iowa (9-0) and Baylor (8-0) are the fifth and sixth teams in the rankings, respectively.
