Clemson coach Dabo Swinney had waited all year for this moment. With No. 1 Clemson (9-0, 6-0) set to play at Syracuse (3-6, 1-4) this Saturday, Swinney couldn’t wait to name long snapper Jim Brown the captain as a tribute to the legendary former Syracuse running back.
His team wasn’t as excited, apparently because they do not know who Jim Brown is. When Swinney told the Tigers of his plans he said he heard “crickets.” Swinney said that the moment was "sad beyond explanation."
Brown, who is widely regarded as one of the top three running backs to ever live, was a consensus all-American at Syracuse in 1956 and played nine seasons in the NFL, rushing for 12,312 yards and 106 touchdowns.
