Clemson QB Watson becomes first 4,000/1,000 player in FBS history

Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson became the first player in FBS history to throw for more than 4,000 yards and eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing mark in the same season during the No. 1 Tigers' 45-40 loss to No. 2 Alabama in Monday night’s College Football Playoff Championship game.

Watson was tremendous Monday, completing 30 of his 47 pass attempts for 405 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for a team-high 73 yards in a losing effort.

The sophomore QB's 405 passing yards broke a championship-game record set by USC's Matt Leinart, who threw for 365 yards in the 2005 Rose Bowl.

Watson entered the contest with 1,032 rushing yards and needed 301 passing yard to accomplish the feat. The sophomore dual-threat QB reached that mark late in the fourth as he directed his unit on an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that ended with the No. 1 Tigers cutting into Alabama’s lead, leaving the score 38-33 with 4:40 left in the game.

The drive was highlighted by a remarkable 39-yard gain by Wayne Gallman.

Clemson scored when Watson hooked up with Artavis Scott on a slant.
