Ole Miss head football coach Hugh Freeze says offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil was arrested in Oxford, Miss., on domestic violence charges against his stepfather, according to reports.

The Clarion-Ledger reports that Tunsil was arrested Thursday night; ESPN says it happened Friday.

The incident occurred while Tunsil was at his mother’s house, according to reporter Brett McMurphy.

"His stepfather shoved his mom and Laremy punched him," a source told ESPN. "It's as simple as that. He was defending his mother."

Freeze verified Tunsil’s arrest and also said the player was acting in defense of his mom, Desiree Tunsil.

“We can confirm that Laremy Tunsil turned himself in and was arrested for a misdemeanor, domestic violence-simple assault," the coach said in a statement given to ESPN. "The incident occurred Thursday night and involves Laremy defending his mother against his stepfather.”

Freeze said that Laremy Tunsil and his mom have pressed charges against Desiree Tunsil’s husband, Lindsey Miller.

"Laremy realizes he could have handled it differently, but I am proud of him for standing up for his mother and protecting his family," Freeze said.

Miller contends he did not push Desiree Tunsil and that Laremy Tunsil instigated the fight, according to the Clarion-Ledger. Miller reportedly claims the incident occurred after an argument with Laremy Tunsil on Thursday afternoon and to have been hit six to seven times.

Miller has requested and been granted a restraining order against Laremy Tunsil, the Clarion-Ledger reports.

Tunsil is entering his third season with the Rebels and was named an All-SEC (first team) pick by The Associated Press last season. The junior is working his way back from broken leg and dislocated ankle endured in the team’s 42-3 Peach Bowl loss vs. TCU.
