Cockerille drops out of Maryland quarterback derby
And then there were three -- again.
Maryland football announced this week Shane Cockerille will continue his career at fullback this fall after being part of the competition to be the Terrapins new starting quarterback this during spring ball.
Cockerille, a great all-around athlete who starred at Baltimore's Gilman School, took first-team reps ahead of Perry Hills. Senior Caleb Rowe is expected to join the fray this fall after sitting out spring ball to focus on rehabilitating a knee injury that ended his 2014 prematurely, and in May the Terps added Daxx Garman, the former starting quarterback at Oklahoma State, as a graduate transfer who is immediately eligible.
Cockerille told the Baltimore Sun he requested the position change out of a desire to make sure he can get on the field at some point soon.
"I hate sitting down," he said. "I just wanted to do anything to help the team win.”
