College Football Hot Seat: 5 Coaches who must win in Week 9

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

This week’s College Football Hot for Week 9 brings some new head coaches as well as old ones to the list.

This week’s hot seat features a couple big names, particularly in the Big 12, who could really use a win. The seat is getting hotter for a few head coaches in Texas.

Other FBS schools are struggling too, with some not winning a game in their last six tries. This week’s college football hot seat serves notice: some coaches jobs are in the balance.

5 Charlie Partridge, Florida Atlantic

Head coach Charlie Partridge is having a rough go of things as the Florida Atlantic head coach. Partridge is 7-24 through three seasons as head coach.

The Owls are currently 1-6 on the season. They have lost their last six games and are 0-3 in Conference USA play. The woes for the Owls are on both sides of the ball. They rank 105th in the FBS in scoring offense, averaging 22.5 points per game. Their scoring defense allows 28.8 points a contest, which ranks 83rd in the FBS.

Partridge and the Owls face Western Kentucky this week, who is 5-3 on the season. While bowl possibilities are lost, the Owls could really use a win to get the win total up at least. Partridge was 3-9 in his first two seasons as head coach.

4 Gary Andersen, Oregon State

Oregon State head coach Gary Andersen has certainly seen better days since leaving Wisconsin.

His Oregon State Beavers sit at 2-5 on the season looking to up their win total from his debut season last year. The Beavers went 2-10 in 2015, going 0-9 in Pac-12 play.

This season, the Beavers have lost four of their last five games. They have won a game in Pac-12 play and sit 1-3 in conference play. With Washington State on the schedule this week, the Beavers could really use an upset victory.

Unfortunately, the Beavers allow more points than the offense scores. The defense allows 32.3 points per game, while the offense scores 23 points per game. If they want to turn things around, it’ll need to start on the defensive side of the ball.

Look for Andersen’s team to get a win this week, or the seat could get a little warmer for him.

3 Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are in a bit of a decline. He comes in at third in this week’s hot seat.

Kingsbury is 22-23 so far through four seasons as head coach. After going 7-6 last season, it looked like the Red Raiders football program turned a corner. At 3-4 on the season and 1-3 in conference play, a win would really do wonders to help save Coach Kingsbury’s job. The Red Raiders face the TCU Horned Frogs.

The Red Raiders boast the number two scoring offense in the FBS, scoring 50.3 points per game. But the defense ranks second to last in points allowed in the FBS, allowing 43.9 points per game, which ranks 127th.

The Air Raid offense is working but the defense can’t seem to stop anybody. The defense allows 532.7 yards per game, which ranks last in the Big 12. If Kliff Kingsbury wants his seat to cool off a bit, winning against TCU would certainly help things. Unfortunately, they’ve lost the last two meetings.

2 Steve Addazio, Boston College

The seat is certainly getting hot for head coach Steve Addazio at Boston College. He comes in ranked second on this week’s hot seat watch.

Addazio is 17-21 through four seasons as the Boston College head coach. Despite their 3-9 record, the Boston College defense ranked fourth in scoring defense, allowing 15.2 points per game. Their record, however, didn’t show that effort as the offense couldn’t seem to keep pace.

Fast forward to this season and both units have taken a step back. The Golden Eagles have lost 12 straight ACC contests dating back to last season. Their scoring defense ranks 50th in the FBS, allowing 24.3 points per game. The offense has fared no better, scoring 21 points per game, which ranks 115th in the FBS.

At 3-4 on the season and 0-4 in ACC play, a bowl season is still salvagable but this week’s game with North Carolina State is a must win for him. The Golden Eagles still face Louisville and Florida State as well. So a win this week would certainly help Addazio’s case. Otherwise, it could be curtains for him very soon.

1 Charlie Strong, Texas

Texas head coach Charlie Strong rounds out this week’s College Football hot seat. Strong started the season strong with his team 2-0 and ranked 11th in the AP Poll. But since then, things have gone sour in Austin.

Strong is 14-18 through three seasons as head coach. The Longhorns are 3-4 this season but have lost four of their last five games. In Big 12 play, their record is 1-3. They ranked as high as 11th through Weeks 2 and 3 before falling out of them ever since.

It looked like things had turned around at the beginning for Strong but things haven’t turned out so great since. The Longhorns offense ranks seventh in the Big 12 in total yards of offense with 479.1 yards a game. Their rushing attack has been stellar but it hasn’t translated into wins.

The Longhorns face bitter rival Baylor this week, the sixth ranked team in the AP Poll. If Strong wants to possibly save his job, starting with an upset victory will help. The Longhorns defeated Baylor 23-17 last season.

If not, things could change in a hurry in Austin as the pressure is set to “very high” for Charlie Strong with the team’s recent losses.
