College football odds Week 1: How to bet Notre Dame-Ohio State
Notre Dame and Ohio State will face off in a college football, Week 1 Prime Time matchup between two legendary football programs.
The Buckeyes will play host to the Fighting Irish at Ohio Stadium as the teams begin their quests to make it to the College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship Game.
Both of these squads finished 2021 with 11-2 records, but which team gets the edge in the Saturday night showdown?
Here's everything you need from a betting perspective on the game between Notre Dame and Ohio State from the point spread, moneyline and total over/under (odds via FOX Bet).
No. 5 Notre Dame @ No. 2 Ohio State (7:30 p.m. ET Saturday, ABC)
Point spread: Ohio State -17 (Ohio State favored to win by more than 17 points, otherwise Notre Dame covers)
Moneyline: Ohio State -714 favorite to win (bet $10 to win $11.40 total); Notre Dame +500 underdog to win (bet $10 to win $60 total)
Total scoring over/under: 58.5 points scored by both teams combined
Being listed as 17-point underdogs like the Irish are against the Buckeyes could easily cause low morale among a coaching staff and throughout a team. But this is not the case for Notre Dame. Instead, it looks like new head coach Marcus Freeman is using that huge number as motivating bulletin board material for his squad.
"I’m gonna write that down," Freeman, the first-year HC told The Athletic's Matt Fortuna. "We’ll use that in a team meeting today. It’s good to know."
Per FOX Sports Research, the Irish went 9-4 against the spread (ATS) last season. And, since 1982, when Notre Dame has been a double-digit underdog, the squad has gone 20-14 ATS. Two good nuggets for gamblers who are mulling over sprinkling a few bucks on the Irish.
On the other side of the ball is home team, Ohio State.
The No. 2-ranked Buckeyes won their most recent championship in 2014 when they defeated the Oregon Ducks 42-20. Their last appearance in a CFP title game was in 2020, which ended in a 52-24 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Based on their history of matchups against Notre Dame, the Buckeyes could be entering this contest confidently. Per FOX Sports Research, the Buckeyes are 4-0 ATS and 4-0 straight up (SU) when playing the Irish since 1995.
And backers debating taking the over or the under of 54.5 points might consider these two programs' 2021 records in that category. Notre Dame's games hit the over in seven of 13 games, while Ohio State's hit the over eight times out of 13.
How are the experts betting this game? For that, we turned to betting analyst Sam Panayotovich.
"It’s making me nervous how much this point spread has ballooned," Sammy P noted.
"Let’s remember that one sportsbook in Nevada opened Ohio State -10.5 several months ago, and the line is all the way out to -17 right now. I was interested in the Buckeyes even at -14, but there’s no way I can tell you that laying the lumber right now is a good habit.
"If Ohio State is up by 21 late and gives up a garbage-time touchdown, you’re going to want to launch the remote through your television. And trust me, nobody wants that.
"FOX Bet is currently dealing the total at O/U 58.5 and the "Over" is my favorite move. Everybody knows OSU should light up the scoreboard with its video-game offense, but if Notre Dame can get to 24 points, there aren’t many avenues for this one to stay "Under."
"Ohio State may very well win big and cover, but I’m playing "Over" 58.5."
